How to Calm a Fussy Newborn
Hey there, tired mom. We know those moments when your newborn is crying can feel overwhelming. But don’t worry – you're not alone in this journey. Every parent has been right where you are, trying to decode their baby's needs. Let's walk through a few ways to help your little one feel better.
Understanding Your Baby's Language
Your baby's cries are their way of having a conversation with you. While it might sound like a mystery language at first, you'll soon become fluent in understanding what they need! Here are the most common things your little one might be trying to tell you:
- Time for a feeding!
- Gas needs release
- A wet or dirty diaper
- Ready for some sweet dreams
- A bit too much excitement
- Not quite cozy enough
- Simply needing some snuggles
The simplest place to start? Check their diaper, offer some cuddles, and make sure they're not too hot or cold. Sometimes that's all it takes to turn those tears into coos! But if that still doesn’t work, there’s a few other tips you can try.
The Magic of the 5 S's
When you've tried everything and your baby is still feeling fussy, this is a gentle approach that works wonders. You might know it as the 5 S's:
- Swaddle: Wrap your little one in our award-winning Cocoon Swaddle, which mimics the womb and can help baby sleep longer. Even better, it has no snaps, zippers, or scratchy Velcro that might irritate your baby.
- Side/Stomach Position: (Only while they're awake!) This position can help them feel more secure and even help release gas.
- Shush: It might surprise you to know that babies don’t want total silence. When they were in utero, they would have heard the “shushing” noise of Mom’s blood flow. Making shushing sounds can help remind them of the womb; you can also use a white noise machine.
- Swing: Gentle rocking motions can work like magic. Swinging your baby gently side-to-side works best when they are already swaddled.
- Suck: Offer a pacifier, finger or milk if it’s feeding time for extra comfort.
Making Diaper Changes a Breeze
Although a full diaper might be one of the reasons your baby is fussy, the process of changing them can also get their mood out of sorts again. But diaper changes don't have to be stressful.
With our Cocoon Swaddle, it’s as easy as 1-2-3. Lay baby down on a flat surface, pull down the two pouches of fabric, and once they have a fresh new diaper on, all you have to do is pull the two pouches of fabric back up to secure. Then you can both get back to sleep!
You've Got This
Remember that you're getting to know your little one better every day. These precious (though sometimes challenging!) moments won't last forever – soon enough your baby will be toddling around and using words instead of tears.
Until then, take it one moment at a time. You're doing an amazing job! And when you need that extra touch of comfort for your little one, Mama Coco's Cocoon Swaddles are here to help make those snuggles sweeter.
